Try to stick to a consistent time each week, but we understand if you need to switch sessions.
On the bariatric journey, self-care isn’t a luxury—it’s essential. Many of us play so many roles: parent, partner, friend, caregiver, and employee, often leaving little time to focus on our own needs. It’s easy to put ourselves last, especially when self-care might feel indulgent or even selfish. But remember, without prioritizing yourself, it’s difficult to maintain the energy and resilience needed to achieve your goals. Self-care is about nurturing your body, mind, and emotions so you can show up for yourself as fully as you do for others.
After our Project Rest session this week, consider one small act of self-care that you can easily fit into your daily routine. This might look like setting aside 10 minutes each morning for meditation to center yourself or taking a brief walk after lunch for some fresh air and mental clarity. Small, consistent moments of self-care can make a big difference. By shifting your mindset to see self-care as a commitment rather than an option, you reinforce your journey’s progress and build a foundation for long-term success.
While we often focus on consistent effort in workouts, prioritizing rest is just as important for achieving our goals. Rest days are not just about giving our muscles time to repair and strengthen; they’re an opportunity for self-care, helping us connect with our bodies and ensure we’re truly supporting our health.
Rest days allow muscles to rebuild, helping to prevent injuries and avoid burnout. When we push our bodies too hard without rest, it can lead to fatigue, decreased motivation, and even weakened immunity. Additionally, making time for self-care practices—such as quality sleep, balanced nutrition, and mindful activities like stretching or meditation—can support mental and emotional well-being, which is equally important on your fitness journey. Incorporating rest days allows you to return to your workouts with renewed energy and helps maintain a positive and sustainable approach to fitness.
Integrating self-care into your routine by actively resting, checking in with how your body feels, and treating recovery as part of the fitness process can make the journey more rewarding and enjoyable. This holistic approach to fitness leads to more balanced progress, ultimately supporting both your physical and mental health. If you’re wondering how to structure rest into your program, it doesn’t necessarily mean a day of inactivity. Active recovery days, like light stretching, walking, or gentle yoga, can also help keep your muscles flexible and ready for your next session.
It’s been 8 weeks since we set those SMART goals, and 4 weeks since we last checked in. To help us stay accountable, we’re going to monitor and evaluate how our SMART goals are going! Here’s a quick reminder of what SMART goals are all about.
Have you hit the SMART Movement goals you’ve set?
If so, amazing! Give yourself a pat on the back and keep that momentum rolling! Check in with how you’re feeling. Is it time to add a little more? One more workout a week or maybe a 45-minute workout instead of a 30-minute workout?
If you haven’t hit those goals yet, that’s okay! Let’s see what’s going on. Write out any obstacles that may have gotten in your way in the last 4 weeks. Is there anything we can do differently if those same challenges come up? It’s always helpful to have a plan. Let’s re-evaluate those goals. This could be an opportunity to add in some active recovery days like a nice walk or gentle stretching. Adjust those SMART goals to help set you up for success in this upcoming month!
Whether you’re hitting your goals or considering some changes, now’s a great time to reflect and plan for the month ahead. What new goals would you like to reach?
Eating nutritious, balanced meals isn’t just about fueling your body; it’s a form of self-respect and self-care. When we make time to plan and prepare meals that support our health, we’re prioritizing ourselves in a deeply impactful way. Even if life gets busy, having simple, nourishing meals ready can prevent the urge to rely on quick, unhealthy options that may not serve your goals.
For example, consider preparing a batch of protein-packed meals for the week. By having these go-to meals on hand, you set yourself up for success each morning. Additionally, practicing mindful eating can be a powerful self-care tool. Enjoy these recipes specifically created to be meal prep friendly so you can start your week on the right foot! Take a moment to savor each bite, allowing yourself to connect with the nourishment you’re giving your body. These small, intentional acts of self-care can empower you to make choices that keep you aligned with your goals.
Self-care can sometimes feel challenging when life is filled with obligations, but staying motivated to carve out time for yourself is essential. Think of self-care as a protective foundation: the more you nurture yourself, the stronger and more resilient you’ll feel as you encounter life’s ups and downs. Regular movement can serve as a great stress reliever, even if it’s just a short stretch or a quick walk during a busy day. Physical activity releases endorphins that can boost your mood and help you maintain a positive outlook.
Another powerful motivator is community. Surround yourself with people who encourage and uplift you—whether in our Project Reset group, friends, or family members who support your journey. Having others who understand your experience can reinforce your commitment and help you stay on track. Lastly, explore forms of self-care that bring joy, like listening to your favorite music, spending time in nature, or diving into a good book. Each of these moments of self-care contributes to your overall well-being and strengthens your motivation to stay on your bariatric journey with resilience and purpose.
