Mindset

Wow – this week we will have an amazing session on Breaking Free from Shame

In our upcoming Project Reset session we will explore:

  • Obesity and Shame
    • We will talk about how society’s view of weight can make us feel ashamed of our bodies. Understanding this connection is a huge step in changing how we see ourselves—because shame doesn’t define us.
  • Weight Stigma and Bias
    • Weight bias can show up everywhere—at work, in healthcare, even in our own families—and it takes a toll on our mental health. We dove into how recognizing these biases allows us to challenge them and rewrite our own story.
  • Brené Brown’s TED Talk
    • We will watch Brené Brown’s TED talk on Shame. It is powerful and I can’t wait to discuss it!
  • Non-Food Shame Busters
    • We will discuss ideas for handling shame without turning to food. From practicing mindfulness and journaling to reaching out to supportive friends, you’re already building tools to tackle those tough emotions in healthier ways.

Your courage to share, reflect, and grow is what makes this journey so special. Keep leaning into these insights, and remember: shame doesn’t get to have the final word. You do.

Movement

Have you ever caught yourself saying things like, “I should work out today,” or “I should be doing more at the gym”? That’s what we call “shoulding all over yourself”—a mindset that often leads to guilt, pressure, and a negative relationship with exercise. Let’s explore how to turn those “shoulds” into more empowering thoughts.

The Trap of “Shoulding” “Should” thoughts come from a place of external pressure rather than genuine motivation. When we say, “I should go for a run,” we’re implying that our current actions aren’t good enough. This perspective can drain the joy out of movement and make it feel like a chore.

A Different Approach: Find Your “Want To” Instead of “shoulding,” try to reframe your thoughts around exercise:

  • What type of movement feels good today?
  • What are some activities you want to do because they make you feel strong or energized?
  • How can you move in a way that’s fun or relaxing?

Shifting from “I should exercise” to “I want to feel good by moving my body” turns exercise into a gift to yourself, not a task to check off. It becomes about listening to what your body wants and needs, instead of pushing it with external expectations.

Tips to Avoid “Shoulding” in Exercise:

  • Set Intentions, Not Requirements: Instead of rigid workout rules, set flexible goals based on how you feel each day.
  • Focus on Feeling: Pay attention to how different types of movement make you feel—energized, strong, or relaxed. Use these feelings as your motivation.
  • Celebrate Small Wins: Every bit of movement counts. Celebrate walking the dog, stretching, or dancing in your kitchen as much as you would a workout.

By transforming “should” into genuine want, we cultivate a healthier, more sustainable relationship with movement. This approach fosters joy and consistency, making it easier to stay active for the long term.

What types of movement feel best for you and bring you joy?

Meals

When it comes to meals and nutrition, it’s not about being perfect—it’s about finding balance and creating a healthy relationship with food that works for you. Forget the rigid rules and shame. You deserve to nourish your body in a way that’s sustainable and satisfying, without the pressure of getting it all right every time.

We know food choices can sometimes bring up feelings of shame, but it’s time to let that go. Instead, focus on progress over perfection. Whether it’s mindful eating, managing cravings, or understanding portion sizes, it’s all about finding what fits your lifestyle and goals. To help give you some guidance of types of meals to enjoy, check out this 1 week meal plan! As always, this is a guide for you to use as you see fit, not a prescription to follow exactly.

So, wherever you are on your journey, keep going! The key is to learn, grow, and celebrate the small wins along the way. Nourish your body and embrace the progress you’re making—one meal at a time!

Motivation

I want to remind you of something important: you are stronger than you think. Facing shame isn’t easy—it asks us to confront parts of ourselves we’d rather avoid. But you’ve already taken a brave step by showing up, being open, and starting the process of breaking free.

It’s easy to let shame make us feel small, but the fact that you’re here means you’re refusing to let it have the last word. Every time you recognize a limiting belief, challenge weight stigma, or choose a healthier way to cope, you’re rewriting your story.

Progress doesn’t always look like a giant leap. Sometimes it’s the little decisions we make each day—choosing compassion over criticism, reaching out instead of retreating, taking a deep breath when things get tough. Those moments matter, and they add up.

You have the power to reshape your life, not just in big, dramatic ways, but in the everyday choices you make to value yourself. Remember, this journey isn’t about perfection. It’s about persistence, patience, and the belief that you are worth the effort.

You’ve already started the work. Keep going—you’ve got this!

XOXO,
