Laparoscopic vs. Robotic Bariatric Surgery

When considering bariatric surgery, patients are often bombarded with marketing that touts robotic-assisted surgery as the latest and greatest advancement. But does it truly offer better results? At BodyByBariatrics, we take a different approach—one that prioritizes you, your safety, your results, and your bottom line.

Laparoscopic vs. Robotic: What’s the Difference?

Both laparoscopic and robotic bariatric surgeries use small incisions and a camera to perform the procedure with minimal trauma to the body. However, the way they’re performed—and the impact on the patient—differs:

  • Laparoscopic Surgery: The surgeon is right next to you, using specialized instruments to perform the procedure with skill and precision.
  • Robotic Surgery: The surgeon is sitting 15 feet away, manipulating a robot through a console—often wearing socks instead of standing at the operating table.

While robotic surgery might sound high-tech and futuristic, it doesn’t improve patient outcomes, decrease complications, or shorten recovery time compared to laparoscopy. It does drive up costs for patients which can limit access to care.

Robotic surgery often requires larger incisions because the robotic instruments and trocars (the ports used to insert the instruments) are bulkier than those used in laparoscopic surgery. This can lead to more post-operative discomfort, longer healing times, and a greater risk of wound-related complications. Ouch!

  1. Laparoscopic Surgery is More Efficient

Speed matters in surgery. The longer a procedure takes, the higher the risk of complications such as infections, blood clots, and anesthesia-related issues. Laparoscopic bariatric surgery is significantly faster than robotic-assisted surgery, meaning:

Less time under anesthesia (which reduces risks)
Lower complication rates
Faster recovery for you

  1. It’s More Cost-Effective for Patients

Robotic systems are incredibly expensive, and those costs get passed down to patients and insurance companies. The result? Higher bills, bigger out-of-pocket expenses, and unnecessary financial stress.

Laparoscopic surgery is more affordable
No extra costs
More accessible to patients who need life-changing bariatric surgery

  1. We Stay Right by Your Side

Would you rather have your surgeon standing next to you, hands-on and fully in control, or sitting across the room behind a machine? We prefer to be right there with you—making split-second decisions with direct access, rather than relying on a robot’s mechanical arms.

Hands-on precision
Immediate response to changes in the OR
Better connection between surgeon and patient

  1. Simplicity is Key

Bariatric surgery is already incredibly effective and safe with laparoscopic techniques. Adding a robot doesn’t make it better—it just adds unnecessary complexity. More moving parts means:

More things that can break or malfunction
Longer setup and operating times
No proven benefit for weight loss or complication rates

  1. We Put Patients First, Not Profits

We choose laparoscopic surgery because it’s the best option for YOU. It allows us to:

Perform surgery at a lower cost
Give more patients access to life-changing care
Deliver faster, safer, and more effective results

Choose What’s Best for You

For us, laparoscopic bariatric surgery remains the gold standard. It’s faster, safer, and more affordable, and it ensures that your surgeon is right there with you.
